Mountain Sangha: Hot Yoga, Pilates, and Breathwork on Highway 9

Sangha is a Sanskrit word for community, and the studio at 12788 Highway 9 leans into it: the mountain part is where you are, and the sangha part is the point. Mountain Sangha is Boulder Creek's hot yoga and Pilates studio, a heated room a short walk from downtown where the schedule runs from six in the morning on weekdays.

It's one of two Pilates addresses in town, and they don't overlap much. Treetop Pilates teaches classical machine work on reformers and towers; Mountain Sangha runs mat-based Hot Pilates, hot and gentle yoga, strength intervals, and a run of breathwork and sound offerings you'd otherwise be driving over the hill for.

The classes

The yoga side covers most temperatures and speeds: Hot 26 Vibes, hot flow, mixed flow, slow flow, gentle flow, yin, and restorative. The strength side is Hot Pilates, HIIT, a sculpt series, and combination classes that pair Pilates or HIIT with a yoga stretch in a longer 75-minute block. Beginners get their own on-ramp with a yoga stretch and beginner Pilates class.

Then there's the part of the schedule the studio calls Sangha Specials: breathwork sessions with Tamar Frey and Jenn Hicklin, sound baths with Sera Timms, and a women's circle. Private sessions run alongside the group schedule, including private sound healing and breathwork, and the studio rents its space for events and parties.

Space is limited and booking is online, so reserve a spot before you drive over rather than turning up on spec. The schedule and booking run through the studio's site.

Who's teaching

The studio was opened by Shanon Farney, who left a 20-year corporate career and came to teaching through a Hot Pilates class she walked into more or less by accident. She's an RYT-200 registered yoga teacher, a certified Hot Pilates teacher, and a breathwork facilitator coach.

The teaching roster around her runs deeper than a town this size has any right to expect: Charina Makovsky has practiced Ashtanga, Iyengar, yin, and restorative yoga since 2004 and has taught everyone from children to elders to postpartum mothers; Laura Manley is a Vinyasa teacher with a dance background who the studio notes is one of just a few certified Modo hot yoga teachers in Northern California; and Tamar Frey and Jenn Hicklin carry the breathwork, reiki, and ceremony side of the schedule.

What it costs

Prices as published on the studio's site, worth confirming before you buy:

  • Drop-in: $25 a class
  • Wednesday drop-in: $15
  • Intro month: $100 for one month of unlimited classes, once per person
  • 15-class pass: $300, which works out to $20 a class, with no expiration date
  • Unlimited month: $165, expiring 31 days from purchase
  • 6-month unlimited auto-bill: $155 a month; 12-month: $145 a month
  • Seniors 60 and up: 10 percent off packages, passes, and drop-ins, with their own auto-bill tiers

One thing to read before you sign: the 6- and 12-month auto-bill plans are commitments, and the studio's terms say no cancellation and no refunds on them. The intro month and the Wednesday rate are the low-stakes ways in.

Private training is sold in packages of three, six, or ten sessions; ask the studio for rates.
