Jobs in the San Lorenzo Valley

The board carries three kinds of work, and it helps to know which is which before you start scrolling.

Inside the valley, openings are scarce, and most of them come from San Lorenzo Valley Unified. The district is the largest employer up here by a wide margin, and its instructional assistant, coaching and substitute positions turn over through the year.

Within commuting distance there's a good deal more: the county's other school districts, the County Office of Education, Cabrillo College, city and county agencies, and retail and hospitality in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Aptos and Capitola. These show an estimated drive time on each card, and anything genuinely far, like Watsonville, is marked as an extended commute and kept off the local tab unless you ask for it.

Before you take the on-site job

Santa Cruz is about 30 minutes from Boulder Creek on a clear day and considerably longer when Highway 9 is wet, dark, or closed. San Jose is roughly the same 30 minutes over Bear Creek Road, in good conditions and can be twice that at commute times. Winter storms close Highway 9 more often than newcomers expect, and a closure turns a short drive into a long detour through Felton or over the summit.

None of that makes a commute a bad idea. Plenty of people here do it happily. It's worth driving the route at the hour you'd actually be driving it before you commit to it.

What this board doesn't have

A lot of valley work never gets posted anywhere. Trades, caregiving, cleaning, landscaping, seasonal help and shop shifts are usually filled by word of mouth or a sign in a window. For that kind of work the directory is a better starting point than any job board: find the businesses you'd want to work for, and ask them directly.
