Atmospheric Rivers Explained for Santa Cruz Mountain Residents

The wind swings around to the south and turns warm, the sky drops low and gray, and by evening the gutters are running. If you've lived through a Santa Cruz Mountains winter, you've met an atmospheric river, even if you didn't call it that.

An atmospheric river, or AR, is a long, narrow band of concentrated water vapor that streams in off the Pacific and dumps enormous amounts of rain when it hits our mountains. A single strong one can deliver much of a winter's rain in a couple of days, which is exactly why they drive most of our flooding, road washouts, and debris flows. What an atmospheric river actually is

Picture a river in the sky, hundreds of miles long, carrying water vapor from the tropics toward the West Coast. When that moisture-laden air runs into terrain like the Santa Cruz Mountains, it's forced upward, cools, and wrings out as rain, often a lot of it, over the same watersheds again and again.

The strongest ones get called a "Pineapple Express" when the moisture tracks from near Hawaii. ARs aren't rare or exotic. They're the workhorses of California's water year, and a handful of them supply much of our annual rain.

Why they hit us so hard

Two reasons. First, our steep terrain squeezes extra rain out of every storm. Second, the San Lorenzo River and its tributaries drain a lot of that water right past our towns, so heavy, sustained rain shows up fast as high water.

Add saturated ground late in the season, and burned hillsides from the CZU fire, and an atmospheric river can mean flooding, debris flows, fallen trees, and a Highway 9 that's suddenly the weak link out of the valley.

The AR scale, from weak to exceptional

Researchers at the Scripps Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes rank atmospheric rivers on a scale of 1 to 5, from "weak" and mostly beneficial to "exceptional" and mostly hazardous. It works a lot like a hurricane category: a Cat 1 or 2 AR is usually welcome rain, while a Cat 4 or 5 is the kind that floods rivers and washes out roads.
