Beck's Shoes: The Weekends Only Store at the South End of Town

Adam Beck moved to Boulder Creek at five years old. Long before the family shoe business had a storefront on Highway 9, there were school days at Boulder Creek Elementary and Redwood Elementary. Later came five years as a Ben Lomond firefighter.

When Beck's Shoes donated a gift basket to the local fire department's raffle, Adam had a personal reason to care where it went.

“I was a Ben Lomond firefighter for five years, so I have a very personal connection to the people who serve our local communities,” Adam says. “I will always love supporting our local fire departments whenever I can.”

That connection to the Valley also helped shape the store at 12550 Highway 9. Beck's does business across six states, but Boulder Creek is where its CEO grew up.

Giving the hometown a crack at it

The Rack concept started with a practical problem: thousands of pairs of shoes spread across the business that still needed to sell. Adam wanted to bring some of that older inventory together and offer it here.

“I wanted to create a place where we could condense some of that older inventory and give my hometown a crack at it.”

Adam calls the concept a passion project. But keeping the doors open seven days a week wasn't working. The store wasn't busy enough to justify that schedule, so the Boulder Creek location shifted to a weekends-focused Rack format, open Thursday through Sunday.

The arrangement brings discounted stock together with regular-price work boots and the company's core athletic products. Adam says merchandise is typically discounted 45 to 85 percent, though that doesn't apply to every pair. The selection changes as inventory moves through the store.

One part of the earlier shop remains: the foot scanner is still in Boulder Creek. The change in format didn't mean that equipment disappeared.

For shoppers, the current routine is four days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Weekends Only page has the store details and changing offers.

Back in Boulder Creek

For Adam, the Boulder Creek store sits in the same place as his school years and his time with the Ben Lomond Fire Department. “Boulder Creek has always had that small-town feel, and I'm proud that Beck's has been able to be part of it.”
