Andrew Hensano calls his pie cookies Pie-ookies. His sugar cookies are Oopsie Doodles, his Little Miss Bossy Biscuits come in a pink box with a nod to Ted Lasso, and poems describe the treats on the Butter Late Than Never Baking Co. website.
Before opening Butter Late Than Never in Boulder Creek, he spent a decade managing LinkedIn's North America Food & Events program. There were cafes, coffee bars and event catering to oversee at 13 locations across the United States and Canada. He baked for his coworkers, too, because he enjoyed it.
"It was a fun job in many ways, but baking has always been my true passion," he says.
When he decided to leave tech and work for himself, he needed time before opening the bakery.
"I was feeling a bit burned out when I left the tech industry," Andrew says. "It took me a little while to actually get Butter Late going because I needed some time to recover and learn how to run a small business."
He put the delay in the name.
"Butter Late Than Never Baking Co. was born of my love of puns and my lack of speed getting my baking business open."
A neighbor looking at the website thought little Dr. Seuss-style poems would suit the playful products.
"I loved the suggestion and ran with it!" Andrew says.
Now a pair of lines introduces the madeleines:
Oh, I see a sweet little shell-shaped delight!
It's golden and fluffy, a wonderful bite!
The animal-cookie poem has hippos, giraffes and a flurry of sprinkles. Childhood favorites turn up in the recipes: Rice Krispies Treat Cookies with marshmallows, Fruity Pebbles cookies with white chocolate. The chocolate chip cookies use three kinds of chips.
For a birthday, Andrew can put a message on a cookie cake in your choice of buttercream color. Special requests can take him beyond cookies to scones, pies and cheesecakes, or a pink lemonade loaf. If the dessert you had in mind isn't listed, he invites you to ask about making it.

The bakery is home-based, with orders through the online shop and delivery areas and fees here. Allow at least a week's notice for special orders. The animal-cookie poem gets the last word:
And crunch all your animal worries away!
