Tae's Edo Sushi Bar: The Sushi Restaurant in Boulder Creek

Tae's Edo Sushi is the sushi restaurant in Boulder Creek, and for most of the San Lorenzo Valley it's the sushi restaurant full stop. It's at 13271 Highway 9, downtown, and it serves Japanese food six days a week.

When it is open

The schedule is the useful part, because Tae's Edo doesn't run a continuous kitchen. Dinner is 4 to 8, Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday add a lunch window from noon to 3 before the same 4 to 8 dinner. It's closed Monday.

The lunch service is the newer half. The restaurant still leads its own site with a banner announcing it, which is worth knowing if you last checked their hours a while ago.

An 8 p.m. close is early, and normal for this town. The Red Pearl serves later, to 9, and Taqueria Los Gallos runs to 8:45 on weeknights; past that, the kitchens are dark.

The restaurant describes its own room as having a "cozy and elegant ambiance," and it's an independent dining room rather than a chain or a counter.

The signature rolls are the reason to cross the room: seventeen house rolls, several named for home, including the Boulder Creek ($16), the Highway 9 ($15), the Route 35 ($15), and the Santa Cruz ($18), alongside the Edo Philli ($15), Evergreen ($13), Fire Cracker ($17), FX Spider ($17), Golden CA ($15), Hail Storm ($15), Hot Night ($15), Jumbo ($17), Kapa Fantasy ($16), Mango Bueno ($15), Red Dragon ($17), Roxy ($17), and Yami Yami ($18).

The rest of the board:

• Maki, cut or hand-rolled ($8 to $12): the classics, from avocado, tuna, salmon, and California rolls up through shrimp tempura, unagi, salmon skin, futo maki, and the spicy tuna, salmon, hamachi, and scallop rolls, plus a Philli roll with salmon, cream cheese, and avocado.
• Sushi and nigiri ($7 to $18): maguro, sake, hamachi, albacore, ebi, tako, unagi, hotate, hokkigai, kani, inari, tamago, tobiko, and uni at the top of the range.
• Sashimi: four-piece plates ($14 to $17), a nine-piece assortment ($27), and a sixteen-piece spread ($48).
• Appetizers ($7 to $19): edamame plain or spicy garlic, gyoza, shrimp tempura, baked mussels, spicy tuna on crispy rice, jalapeno poppers they call the T-Bomb, a tofu plate, and Tommy's Cajun tuna.
• Salads ($8 to $18): Edo salad, seaweed salad, poki salad, and a Japanese ceviche of assorted sashimi in the house dressing.
• Specials: chirashi and Korean chirashi ($32), una-don ($32), and the big sashimi platters.
• Bento: a three-item dinner bento box ($29).

There is sake on the list, hot and cold, from house hot sake ($5) through junmai, nigori, and sparkling bottles, with Kirin and Sapporo and wine by the glass alongside.

Is Tae's Edo open for lunch?

Friday and Saturday only, from noon to 3 p.m. Every other day it's dinner service, 4 to 8 p.m.

No. It's closed Mondays, as are Scopazzi's and the Red Pearl. Monday is the quiet night in Boulder Creek.
