Late winter: the BCVFD Crab Feed

The Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department's Crab Feed is the first big night of the year: a sit-down dinner of fresh crab, pasta, salad, and bread at the fire station on Central Avenue, served by the volunteers themselves. It's landed in March in recent years, tickets are capped at what the room holds, and it tends to sell out, so plan ahead. Proceeds keep the all-volunteer department equipped.

Late spring: Lumberjack Days, now at Roaring Camp

After its years in Boulder Creek, Lumberjack Days has moved to a larger venue, Roaring Camp down the valley in Felton, and it's worth the trip. The day is built around real logging competitions (axe throwing, chainsaw classes, choker setting, bucking saw, vertical chopping) with a King or Queen of the Woods crowned, plus kids' events, barbecue, beer and cider, and live music. Every Fourth of July: pancakes, the parade, and Junction Park

The Fourth is the town's biggest day. The volunteer firefighters serve a pancake breakfast at the firehouse from early morning toward noon, a fundraiser for medical and rescue equipment. The parade follows Highway 9 through downtown at mid-morning, a tradition the business association says the town has held for generations, and a barbecue with live bands at Junction Park carries the afternoon. Highway 9 closes through downtown while the parade runs, so park once and walk.

An August Saturday: the BCVFD Summer BBQ & Dance

One night every August, the engines roll out onto the apron and the tables go into the apparatus bay for the fire department's biggest fundraiser, the Summer BBQ & Dance. Firefighters cook and serve tri-tip and chicken, bands play on a stage out back until late, and there's a bounce house for the kids. It stays a working fire station the whole night, and the proceeds buy rescue and medical equipment. Later in August, community radio KBCZ 89.3 throws its own party, the KBCZ Music Fest, an afternoon of live bands at Garrahan Park and the station's main fundraiser.

Early fall: the Santa Cruz Mountain Harvest Festival

When the weather turns, downtown gets one more big afternoon. The Harvest Festival fills Junction Park and the Downtown Rec Center with live music, food vendors, local beer and wine, and dozens of area artists and makers. The Recreation and Park District and its foundation run it as a fundraiser for community nonprofits. It's all ages, and it has recently landed on a Saturday in late September. Plan for sun and tight parking.

Halloween: trick-or-treat down Highway 9

Mountain driveways are too long and too dark for door-to-door, so on Halloween evening the town brings the candy to one strip instead. Downtown merchants along Highway 9 hand out candy in the early evening, usually about 5 to 7 p.m., with volunteers helping families cross the highway. Thanksgiving into December: the tree lighting at the Winter Festival

The holidays center on one moment: Santa arriving to light the town Christmas tree on Forest Street. Around it, the Winter Festival runs a full afternoon, with live music, artisan vendors, a food court, and free activities like a snow-play area and a hay ride, plus ticketed extras like Santa photos. The Boulder Creek Business Association leads it, with the Recreation and Park District and the Odd Fellows as partners, and it's free to walk into. Christmas Eve: the Reindeer Run

The year closes at a run. On Christmas Eve morning, runners, walkers, strollers, and plenty of costumes leave Junction Park for a 5K along Highway 9 and Irwin Way. The Recreation and Park District Foundation puts it on as its own fundraiser; all abilities are welcome, kids 12 and under are free, and registration runs through the run's site, with details on the events calendar too.

And every week and month in between

Two smaller rhythms fill the gaps. First Friday keeps downtown open late on the first Friday of every month, 5 to 8 p.m., with art, vendor tables, and music along the strip. And the farmers market sets up at Junction Park on Thursday afternoons, May through October.
