A Night Out in and Around Boulder Creek

Downtown Boulder Creek doesn't put out much of a marquee glow after dark, but a few doors stay lit and worth walking toward. Some nights you just want a drink, a stage, and somewhere to land, and you'd rather not guess who's open. Here's where to go in town, and where to head down the valley when Boulder Creek winds down before you're ready to.

My own version of a Boulder Creek night out, for the record: a nice dinner at Scopazzi's and a drink at the bar after, or live music at lille aeske or Joe's. These days, with a baby whose bedtime outranks everything, it's more of a fond memory than a weekly habit. The town will still be doing all of this when you're ready to come back out.

Joe's Bar

Joe's Bar is the downtown bar and live-music room, and it's the anchor of a Boulder Creek night out. Its own calendar posts karaoke every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. and a pool tournament every Thursday at 8 p.m., with live music most weekends, so there's usually a reason to stop in.

Scopazzi's lounge

Scopazzi's Restaurant & Lounge is the historic Italian restaurant in town, and the lounge is the quieter, sit-down side of an evening out: a drink and a table rather than a stage. It runs Wednesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. and closes Monday and Tuesday.

Think of it as the spot for a calmer evening or a nightcap after dinner, not a late night.

The former Sawmill operation

The Sawmill Restaurant & Alehouse sat just north of downtown, pairing American food and craft beer with outdoor seating and a music stage under the redwoods. The description is historical; the former operation is no longer open.

The former Sawmill operation closed after service on August 14, 2026. No successor or reopening has been confirmed, so it is not counted as a current night-out option. The Sawmill article preserves the former operation's history.

Lille Aeske Arthouse

13160 Highway 9, Boulder Creek.

Lille Aeske Arthouse is the town's other kind of evening out: a small arthouse hanging a rotating monthly show, with concerts, film nights, and events on its own calendar rather than a nightly schedule. It's the room to check when you'd rather see something than sit at a bar. Its gallery hours run weekend afternoons, and evening events are posted per show, so look at what's booked before you plan around it.

Big Basin Vineyards tasting room

830 Memory Lane, Boulder Creek. Phone: (831) 621-8028. Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., April through October; Saturdays only in November and December; closed to the public January through March. Fireside Fridays run 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., May through October.

Big Basin Vineyards Estate Vineyard & Tasting Room pours its mountain-grown wines at the estate vineyard. Most of the year it's a daytime stop that fits an early Saturday or Sunday plan, but Fireside Fridays through the warm months are a genuine evening option, wine by the fire under the redwoods. Worth checking the season before you drive out: the room closes to the public from January through March.

Up the valley: Henflings Tavern, Ben Lomond

Henflings Tavern has been a Santa Cruz Mountains tavern in downtown Ben Lomond since 1946, about ten minutes down Highway 9. You get live music every weekend, a recurring Sunday Pro Jam, a full bar, a food menu, and a covered patio, and it stays open daily until 1:30 a.m., the latest independently posted closing time in the valley.

If Boulder Creek is winding down and you're not ready to, this is where the night keeps going.

Up the valley: Felton Music Hall, Felton

Felton Music Hall is the dedicated live-music venue in Felton, presenting local and touring acts across genres, with craft food and cocktails from a full bar served in-house. It's the room to check when you want a booked lineup and a proper stage.

What a Boulder Creek night out doesn't include

A few things worth naming before you head out:

No nightclub. Boulder Creek doesn't have one, and the only place in town proper built for a late night is Joe's Bar.
Daytime and dinner hours wind down early. Big Basin Vineyards is weekend afternoons outside its Fireside Friday season, and Scopazzi's lounge keeps restaurant hours. Joe's remains the in-town late-night option, with hours most recently confirmed directly with the business. Henflings in Ben Lomond posts its own closing time publicly.
The drive matters. Plan a designated driver or a ride for the Highway 9 stretch, and check ages, since Joe's Bar is 21 and over.
