The Sawmill Restaurant & Alehouse: Boulder Creek's Yard Under the Redwoods

The Sawmill is where a meal in Boulder Creek turns into an evening outdoors. It sits at 15520 Highway 9, a few minutes north of downtown and across the street from Garrahan Park, and it puts American fare and craft beer in a large open yard with a stage in it.

The restaurant describes itself as a place for "American fare, craft beers and an expansive outdoor area with a music stage," and that's the shape of it: burgers and pub food, beer on tap, and far more seating outside than a room its size would suggest. Its own Facebook page puts it more plainly still, as "casual dining with a beautiful outdoor area for on leash dogs and families."

That last part matters locally. Dogs on leash are welcome in the yard, which narrows the list of places in the valley you can bring one to dinner.

• Burgers, the center of the menu, built on half-pound Braveheart Black Angus beef ($15 to $21): the cheeseburger ($18), BBQ burger with an onion ring and bacon ($20), mushroom burger with Santa Cruz Fungi mushrooms and marsala ($20), bacon avo burger ($20), the Big Smack ($21), a chopped cheese ($18), single and double smash burgers ($15 and $19), a junior cheeseburger ($15), and chicken or shroom phillies ($15).
• Appetizers ($12 to $15): wings in buffalo, dry rub, BBQ, or garlic parmesan ($14 and up), a beer-battered onion ring tower with logger sauce ($14), jalapeno poppers ($12), garlic and garlic-parmesan fries ($12), and tenders with fries ($15).
• Sandwiches ($17 to $18): fried chicken on a buttermilk-marinated thigh, tri tip with bacon and cheddar, Cali chicken, pesto chicken, and a BLTA.
• Salads and vegetarian ($10 to $18): a poached pear and candied walnut salad, arugula salad, iceberg wedge, Caesar, Baja salad, and a portobello burger, with veggie smash burgers and a veggie cheesesteak on the specials board.
• Entrees: blackened salmon with dill sauce ($35), Baja fish tacos ($15 and up), and fish and chips ($15 and up).
• Wraps ($17): BBQ, buffalo, and Baja.
• Kids and dogs: a kids menu from butter noodles ($8) to a kids cheeseburger ($15), and a K9 menu of plain burgers and grilled chicken for the dog you brought.
• Dessert: sundaes and a root beer float ($8), vegan cheesecake ($9), and a rotating cake or two.

The yard and the stage

The outdoor area is the draw, and it's the part of the restaurant its own site leads with. There's a stage out in the yard, and the Sawmill has run a long list of local and regional acts across it.

Whether a band is playing on the night you want to go is a separate question. The restaurant keeps an events page, but the newest show listed on it's several years old, so it's not a schedule to plan around. Its Facebook and Instagram are the channels that move.
