The town's post office sits just off the main drag on Lorenzo Street, and for most mailing errands it's all you need: stamps, package drop-off, Priority Mail, hold mail, and PO boxes, which you can reserve online through usps.com. Box mail is up by 11 a.m., and the lobby opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday, so early risers can check a box long before the counter opens.

Two timing details. The retail counter closes on weekends, but on Saturday mornings from 6:30 to 11 a.m. you can still pick up a package the carrier left a notice for. And the last outgoing collection is 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on Saturday, so a Saturday afternoon drop won't move until Monday. Brookdale keeps its own small office too, at 105 Pacific Avenue, open weekdays 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Shipping with UPS or FedEx

USPS is the easy carrier in town; the post office is the only place in Boulder Creek to hand a package to a carrier. For UPS and FedEx you have two moves: schedule a home pickup, or drive to their locations.

The pickup is the mountain answer. Both UPS and FedEx let you schedule a pickup from your door through their websites, which turns a drive down the valley into a label and a doorstep handoff. For anything prelabeled, that's usually the least effort.

If you'd rather drop off in person, UPS means Scotts Valley: The UPS Store at 216 Mount Hermon Road for full service, or the UPS Access Point inside CVS at 257 Mount Hermon Road for prelabeled drop-offs. One more Scotts Valley trick: the post office at 241 Kings Village Road has a self-service kiosk in its lobby, open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, the only Sunday shipping option anywhere near the valley.

Passports and passport photos

The Boulder Creek post office doesn't offer passport services, but you don't have to leave the valley either. The Ben Lomond post office at 250 Main Street takes passport appointments weekdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., accepts walk-ins Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and shoots passport photos weekdays until 2 p.m. Book through usps.com or call 831-336-3528. Scotts Valley's post office, for what it's worth, doesn't list passport services at all.
