Viscosity Art Glass: The Glassblowing Studio Downtown
Most of the shops downtown sell things somebody else made. Viscosity sells things made in the building, and for an hour it'll let you make one.
Scott Graham and Cristy Aloysi blow contemporary glass in Boulder Creek and sell it out of a gallery on the downtown block: bubble bowls, vases, drinking glasses, garden glass, wall pieces, and jewelry.
The gallery
Open Fridays 1 to 3 and Saturdays 1 to 5, plus Sundays in December, and by appointment otherwise. The studio's own advice, which is worth repeating: call before you drive a distance, because a retail show can pull them out on a shop day.
Viscosity also opens to the public during two annual events, the San Lorenzo Valley Art Tour in May and Santa Cruz County Open Studios in October.
The classes
An hour, one on one with a glassblower, two students to a slot, and you leave with the thing you made. You book an hour somewhere between 10 and 2 and pick a project going in.

Ages 6 and up, and the studio notes that children under 10 may need help from an adult. Groups of six or more can book a private party, which runs with two instructors and lets everyone choose their own project. Gift certificates are available, which is the obvious answer to a hard-to-buy-for person in a town this size.
