The valley builds things and throws parties

General contractors alone are the largest single category at 25 listings, 8 percent of the directory. Fifty listings carry a license number, 21 of them contractors.
That's what a housing stock of steep parcels, private roads, septic systems, well water and post-fire rebuilds produces. It's also a decent proxy for what people up here actually spend money on.
The second block is stranger and easy to miss until you count it. 54 of 315 listings, 17 percent, serve weddings, parties and events: 11 venues, 8 wedding services, 8 kids-party businesses, 7 caterers and bar services, 7 cake and dessert makers, 7 party rental companies, 6 florists. One in six businesses in this directory exists because people get married under redwoods.

Two in five have no front door
Every listing falls into one of three states.
- 157 of 315, 50 percent, have a street address. A door, a lot, a gate.
- 124 of 315, 39 percent, are marked as having no storefront. They come to you, or you meet them at your site, or the work happens in their garage.
- 34 of 315, 11 percent, have neither. Mostly hotlines, utilities and county services, plus a handful whose address we haven't confirmed.
